Goal Setting, With A Splash of Dell Anno Attitude
Pour yourself a Bossanova.
Now sit back and open your mind while the zest of freshly squeezed lemon juice mingles with the exotic flavours of apricot brandy and freshly pressed pineapple juice. This is a drink as sumptuous as the idea—the life change—we are about to charm you with.
It’s called a Springboard.
You might be familiar with the following definition:
Springboard: /Def/ 1. A strong, flexible board from which someone can jump in order to gain added impetus when performing a dive or a gymnastic movement.
At Dell Anno, we have a different definition (though gaining momentum is still part of it). Our definition is a love song, an ode to inspiration, dedication, and aspiration—and it goes like this:
Springboard: /Def/ 1. A visual representation of your goals, your why, your motivation. A compilation of images, words, lists, and more that drive you every day to reach further and inspire you to act.
Need we say more? It’s sexy, it’s visual, and it’s bound to change your life. And that’s just the beginning. Our definition is only a snapshot of a practice more powerful than a simple soundbite can summarize—a practice inspired by makers, thinkers, and designers. It’s profound in its simplicity and impactful in its execution, and creating a Springboard is just the beginning; it’s where it takes you and how it facilitates change that has us so passionate (can you tell how much we love this practice?).
Our question for you now is, are you enticed?
Where It Comes From
Surrounded by designers, photographers, and all-around creative types, we’ve seen our fair share of inspiration boards. Collections of cut-out images that inspire a look, a feel, and a way of life. And we wanted to take it one step further while capturing the creative essence of an inspiration board.
A Springboard builds upon this creative foundation, but has a different purpose—though we fully recommend gathering images of things you find beautiful if your goal is to create. At the heart of your springboard is your why—that overwhelming goal that keeps you up at night, the one you think about every day, and the one that lingers when you’re working on something else.
Why You Need to Create a Springboard
We don’t just want you to be inspired, we want you to be inspired to act; to achieve; to grow. And in our opinion, there is no better way to get a shot of purposeful inspiration than a Springboard.
How Do You Create One?
Drawing on elements from designers’ inspiration boards, photographers’ mood boards, and entrepreneurs’ goal lists, we combine all three elements to create a springboard, with your goal and your why written out and defined. That’s your core, and from there, you make it your own with quotes, timelines, images, and if you like, you can get crafty and add your own kind of sparkle to it. What matters most is what works for you and creating a visual that not only inspires you, but motivates you when you lose motivation yourself. We know people who fold them up and keep them in their wallet so they can carry it with them and others who hang them in their line of sight so that day in and day out, they are faced with where they want to be, and exactly how they plan on getting there.
Here are a few things we like to include:
- Quotes—frame your goal with the words of people who inspire you
- Images—but don’t go crazy—this isn’t a collage—but make it beautiful
- Mini goals with dates—make your goals specific
- Space for notes—it’s all about reflection
- Colour—be bold and bright or minimalistic and muted, it’s up to you!
- Bold lettering—make certain things stand out so they draw your eye faster
Why Do We Love Springboards?
They’re useful. Provide direction. Enhance motivation. And (because we love a good journey metaphor) they act as personal compasses, helping you find your way when you lose track of your path—whatever your path may be. Springboards can be used to motivate you to plant the garden you’ve always dreamed of, plan a vacation, build a business, achieve a fitness goal, and more. They’re versatile, and entirely up to you.
There’s nothing stopping you, so give it a try (you won’t regret it!).
